Pillory of Vila Real
Like other Pillory’s, or '' picotas '' as they were called, the pillory of Vila Real, was once situated in front of the camara municipal where it was seen in medieval times as a meeting point, in a public place of a town or city where the defendants executed and exposed to public embarrassment.
Today, this monument is situated in the ‘’ largo of the pillory ‘’ a little further away from the building of the camara municipal, totally renovated with the exception of its shaft.
This symbolic monumental landmark, as mentioned above, is a current copy of the original which it rests on a pedestal with three steps, has a base and an octagonal shaft with four faces, which with small arched windows where the judges were tied and flogged, on top of its iron dome which is the original of the time, sets a flag.
In the case of the Pillory of Vila Real, adulterers, criminals, among other types of punishments were stoned, which can not be specified due to the scarcity of information.
